Good Oral Health Begins In The Womb

Dental bacteria can kill more than a smile

Infant and mother hands.

Many people think that caring for their child's teeth begins when the first tooth appears... but consider all the months prior to its debut! Teeth begin developing six weeks after conception and it is important that from the very start, the developing fetus receives all the nutrition it requires for healthy development. To encourage this, mothers-to-be should focus on healthy behaviours including nutritionally balanced meals with plenty of dairy products (which are the best source for calcium, the main building block of teeth and bones).

Malnutrition during pregnancy may lead to a condition called hypoplasia where the infant's tooth enamel does not fully develop and therefore does not protect the teeth from decay as well as it should.
